Introduction

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7

The Panasonic DMC-FZ7 offers a 12x ultra-zoom lens, equivalent to a focal length of 36-432mm, in a relatively compact and stylish body. The DMC-FZ7's Leica-branded lens doesn't just offer a massive focal range - it's also fast too, with a maximum aperture of 2.8 at wide-angle and 3.3 at full telephoto. As with all Panasonic cameras, the company's MEGA O.I.S optical image stabilisation system is present to help ensure shake-free photos. The DMC-FZ7 improves on its predecessor, the popular DMC-FZ5, by offering a much larger 2.5inch LCD screen, manual focusing mode, a 6 megapixel sensor, ISO 800 and 1600 speeds, 16:9 widescreen movies and a new joystick for control of exposure and focusing (as also seen on the DMC-LX1). The Panasonic FZ7 also has a new High Sensitivity mode with a fastest ISO speed of ISO 1600, High Angle mode that brightens the LCD when held overhead, and a faster 1-point auto-focus system. So is the Panasonic DMC-FZ7 the right ultra-zoom camera for you? Read our latest review to discover the answer.

To compose your images, you can use the LCD monitor or the electronic viewfinder. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7 has a 2.5 inch TFT LCD Display which has 114,000 pixels and offers 100% scene coverage. It also has a 0.33 inch electronic viewfinder which also has 114,000 pixels and offers 100% scene coverage. The length of the video is only limited by the size of the memory card that you are using. A 5 second soundclip can be attached to an image. A histogram is available in both shooting and playback modes. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7 supports the DPOF (Digital Print Order Format) and PictBridge printing standards, and it connects to a computer via USB 2.0.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7's dimensions are 112.5 (W) × 72.2 (H) × 79 (D) mm, and it weighs 357g with the battery and storage card fitted. The camera is powered by a rechargeable Li-ion Battery Pack (7.2V, 710mAh), which has an approximate CIPA battery life of 320 shots. There is a metal tripod mount in the centre of the bottom of the camera.

Finally, the standard box kit contains a Battery Charger, Battery Pack, 16Mb SD Card, Lens Cap, Lens Hood, Lens Hood Adaptor, AV Cable, USB Connection Cable, AC Cable, Strap and Software CD-ROM (LUMIX Simple Viewer, PhotofunStudio, ArcSoft PhotoBase, ArcSoft PhotoImpression, ArcSoft Panorama Maker, USB Driver). Note that you can only store 4 images at the highest quality JPEG setting on the supplied 16Mb SD memory card. You will therefore need to invest in some more memory cards to store your images on.
