The Nikon Coolpix S9 would make a perfect Christmas gift for the snap-shooter in your family, but if you're a more serious photographer you probably wouldn't rush out and buy one for yourself. The two words that best sum-up the S9 are "stylish" and "adequate". The "S" in Nikon Coolpix S9 stands for "Style", and this camera certainly delivers on that promise. The distinctive all-metal, wave-design body make the S9 clearly stand out from the crowd of other faceless digicams. Unfortunately the average performance, feature-set and image quality are rather less inspiring. The main flies in the ointment are blurred corners and vignetting at the 38mm wide-angle focal length, poor night shots and a limited ISO range of 64-400. As the S9 is strictly a point and shoot camera, it offers very little in the way of creative controls, but it's perfectly suited to its target audience. Having recently reviewed the Nikon S7c, this particular model strikes me as a de-featured version of the S7c with slightly poorer image quality and all-round performance. The S9 is a lot cheaper though, and if you can live without the bells and whistles, it would make a perfectly reliable pocket digicam, and one that will still impress your friends and family. In summary, you wouldn't be upset if this stylish, slim, point-and-shoot compact camera was in your stocking on Christmas Day, but there are more capable alternatives available.
