The Konica Minolta DiMAGE X50 is very much a Jekyll and Hyde camera, with Jekyll representing the excellent handling and ease-of-use and Hyde the poor image quality. I really wanted this camera to deliver great images, as I enjoyed using it so much. Despite the lack of more advanced settings like being able to set the aperture or shutter speed, the speed and simplicity of the Konica Minolta DiMAGE X50 is a real attraction. Unfortunately, with the images downloaded and viewed at 100%, the drawbacks of cramming 5 megapixels into such a small form factor and small CCD (1/2.5-type) are revealed. There is ultimately a price to pay to have such a small and portable camera, and that price is the less than stellar images. Chromatic aberrations, noise at ISO 200 and above, lack of sharpness and even vignetting are all present. This is a real shame, as in all other respects the Konica Minolta DiMAGE X50 is perfectly suited for the new photographer that it is aimed at, and indeed for any photographer that wants a small and responsive point and shoot model. At the end of the day, however, a camera should be judged solely on the images that it produces, and in this respect the Konica Minolta DiMAGE X50 unfortunately doesn't deliver.
