Image Quality

All of the sample images in this Review were taken using the default 3M 2048x1536 mode, which gives an average image size of between 0.5Mb and 1Mb.

Noise

There is only one ISO setting available on the Fujifilm FinePix S3000 Zoom, which is equivalent to ISO 100.

ISO 100 (100% crop)

The noise levels look fine at ISO 100 - just as well as you don't have too much choice!

Sharpening

Here are two 100% crops which have been Saved as Web - Quality 40 in Photoshop. The right-hand image has had some sharpening applied in Photoshop. The out-of-the camera images are very slightly on the soft side using the default setting of Normal and will benefit from a little sharpening during post-processing. Alternatively you can select the Hard sharpness setting for maximum effect.

Chromatic Aberrations

The Fujifilm FinePix S3000 Zoom coped very well with chromatic aberrations, even in very high-contrast situations. Most purple fringing occurred at the edges of the frame rather than in the centre, as in the following example of a tree with the sun behind it.

Overall Image Quality

The Fujifilm FinePix S3000 Zoom delivers slightly muted images in terms of colour, as you can see from the samples in the next section, which were taken on a bright sunny day. They can be significantly improved by adjusting the contrast and levels/curves in Photoshop, but there are no options in-camera to boost the saturation or other colour parameters. This means that you will have to use an image editor to get the absolute best results from the Fujifilm FinePix S3000 Zoom. The 3M image size allows you to create prints up to A4 in size. Noise is well controlled at the single ISO setting of 100, which is just as well as this is the only ISO option. Chromatic aberrations in the form of purple fringing are largely avoided, even in high-contrast situations where you would expect them to appear. Overall an above-average performance from the Fujifilm FinePix S3000 Zoom in terms of image quality.
