4.5 stars

If you're looking for an ultra-compact camera then you should seriously consider the Casio Exilim Zoom EX-Z55. Casio may not be the first name that you associate with digital cameras, but they have definitely produced a very capable camera in the EX-Z55. It offers better image quality than the Konica Minolta DiMAGE X50 that I have previously reviewed, although the images are still quite noisy at ISO 200 and above. Thankfully it deals a lot better with chromatic aberrations than the Konica Minolta model did, although again you will see purple fringing in some of your photos. With that massive 2.5-inch LCD screen and simple control layout, the Casio Exilim Zoom EX-Z55 is perfectly suited to the new photographer that it is aimed at, and indeed for any photographer that wants a small and very responsive point and shoot model. The only potential downsides from a handling point of view are the small external buttons and controls, which may not suit all hand sizes, and the rather grainy LCD screen, caused by having too few pixels in too large a screen. Despite the lack of more advanced settings like being able to set the aperture or shutter speed, the speed and simplicity of the Casio Exilim Zoom EX-Z55 is a real attraction and it is a great camera for all social occasions.
